Internship reflections
Digital marketing intern Georgie Coombe reflects on the experience and skills gained during a part-time four-month internship with Precision Pastures in Armidale.
Georgie Coombe hails from a cattle station in Central Queensland and is currently studying an undergraduate degree in Agribusiness at the University of New England. She applied for an internship in digital marketing with Precision Pastures and reflects on the skills gained during this time.
Tell us a little bit about you and your background.
I grew up on a cattle property in the mining town of Moura in Central Queensland where I completed my primary and secondary schooling. My family runs a brahman seedstock operation and in the past, also managed a trade cattle operation for a German-owned company. My family moved to the Darling Downs in 2022. I had a gap year out at St George in Queensland where I worked on a cattle station. I commenced university in Armidale in 2023 at the University of New England to study a Bachelor of Agribusiness.
What led you to apply for an internship with Precision Pastures?
I became aware of an internship opportunity at Precision Pastures through a unit coordinator at the university. At the time I had mostly heard about tree carbon due to my time at St George and the Human Induced Regenerative (HIR) practices that were being implemented on some local cattle stations. I was interested to learn more about soil carbon and the role that it will play in the livestock industry in particular. I know that there is a vast lack of knowledge and therefore uncertainty surrounding the sector and I wanted to understand soil carbon to a greater degree myself. I was excited at the opportunity to incorporate my love for agriculture and also for digital marketing.
What excites you about opportunities in agriculture and digital marketing?
I am excited for the opportunities with agriculture and digital marketing. Our industry is at the forefront of many campaigns including climate challenges and with the uprise of social media it is inherent that we promote sustainable and healthy paddock to plate stories. Digital marketing gives us the ability to showcase and promote the practices that Australian farmers are implementing. It also allows a vast range of knowledge to be accessed from anywhere anytime, which is a great asset to our industry. As agricultural enthusiasts we have the chance to market not only our specific service or product but also Australian agriculture to the world.
What are some of the key things you’ve learnt?
Precision Pastures has helped me improve both my digital marketing skills and also knowledge surrounding the soil carbon industry. I have been able to gain basic knowledge in the soil sampling process and what is involved in a project registration. I have also utilised web design tools to create relevant and consistent messages which actively target our main audience: farmers. I have become familiar with digital analytics and therefore analysing the effectiveness of campaigns. Digital marketing is transforming the way we market our products and services and my time at Precision Pastures has been invaluable in learning how to use this to our advantage.
I am grateful for the time that I have spent at Precision Pastures this year. I have learnt practical skills and how to work in a team and office environment. Jess and the Precision Pastures team are great to work with and create a very positive team atmosphere. I have had a lot of fun working with everyone while being here and learning more about an industry that I love.
What do you hope to do when you finish university?
At the conclusion of my university degree, I would like to become more involved with the business and digital marketing side of my family’s brahman stud. I also have a great passion for kelpie working dogs and believe that they play an amazing role in agriculture. I would love to one day be managing a cattle operation with the ability to implement regenerative grazing principles and low-cost production to market and then share our beef story with the world.
